Religious Marriage

Religious marriage is a spiritual celebration offering the couple the opportunity to give their union a moral significance. Each faith has its own approach to the religious ceremony and couples should be aware about it. European legislations are quite different considering religious marriage.

Spain recognizes Catholic marriage as being the only religious ceremony with legally binding effects and it has exactly the same official effects as civil marriage. Italy and Malta recognize any religious marriage as being a legally binding ceremony. France, Monaco and Austria consider religious marriage as a private celebration and their laws do not recognize it as an officially binding ceremony. To avoid any misunderstanding, religious marriage can be celebrated only after the civil ceremony. Couples must show the certificate of legal marriage to the celebrant before the ceremony.

Europe has a very rich religious architecture offering beautiful temples to celebrate a wedding. Some ministers are allowed to celebrate the ceremony in a garden or in a private location.
